Best Retractable Everyday Carry Utility Knives With Replaceable Blades

If you’re into EDC knives as much as I am, you probably already carry at least one on your person wherever you go (Remember that EDC Rules post?). Sometimes you don’t need to pull out that intimidating K-Bar USMC Fixed Blade. You know as well as I do that the small, unarmed Amazon box in front of you has a snowball’s chance in hell against your eager anticipation, but you just don’t want to scare your co-workers into thinking you’re nuts.

A Retractable EDC Utility Knife Is The Answer

We’ve all seen those utility knives in hardware stores. This isn’t anything new for Everyday Carry, but it’s a great option if you have to be discreet, or just don’t want to ruin your show-blade on Amazon packaging.

Utility knives have a wide range of styles and functions, but we’re going to focus on just the ones that you can carry in your pocket or backpack that have retractable blades. These kinds of knives are incredibly convenient. As you use your knife and the blade starts to dull out, you just install a new blade and you’re sharp as new again. There are even some ambitious people that go as far as to resharpen utility blades to get more life out of them.

Me personally, I just go for the Lenox Gold Titanium-coated standard blades, and toss them after dulling them out on a grinder so no one gets hurt.

Now, I prefer to carry my Gerber EAB in the front pocket of my backpack rather than on my person. I always have the backpack with me, and when it comes to basic cutting duties at work, I’d rather pull out the utility knife than the bigger EDC Knife.

Utility Knives are Cost Effective

I don’t know if you can really can consider cost on a utility knife. Blades can be purchased for as low as $0.05 each, depending on how many you get and where you’re getting them, but I tend to get name-brand higher quality blades that last a bit longer. I have Stanley, Lenox and Craftsman blades in the tool chest, but who knows, they’re probably all identical anyway.

The one difference I have noticed is that the cheapie blades are usually a lot thinner and tend to flex a lot more. I like the heavy duty blades for this reason.

Good For Air Travel? – Might Make it Past TSA

No, not with the blade, but I’ve had 100% success in getting the EAB through TSA by removing the blade at home before travel. In the TSA line, I put the knife shell into the bin, open and on top so the agent can inspect it. Obviously there’s no blade so it passes inspection. Not a single agent has ever questioned me about it, but maybe I’ve been lucky.

When I get to my destination (I only travel domestic), I can stop just about anywhere – from a gas station to grocery store, and get a pack of blades.
